How to set up IPTV on Apple TV.
There are two clean ways to watch IPTV on an Apple TV. Install a tvOS player like iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV from the App Store and paste your Xtream Codes login, or AirPlay the stream from an iPhone or iPad and pay nothing extra. There is no sideloading and no Downloader app — tvOS only installs from the App Store, which actually makes this simpler than a Firestick.
At a glance
- Setup time
- 5 minutes for a native app; instant for AirPlay.
- App we recommend
- iPlayTV (paid, cleanest) or GSE Smart IPTV (free) from the tvOS App Store.
- Difficulty
- Easy. App Store only — no sideloading, no Downloader app.
- What you need
- OTTV Xtream Codes login (server, username, password), a 4th-gen Apple TV or newer on tvOS, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Two ways to do it.
Pick the route that matches how you watch. A native tvOS app is the better everyday setup because the TV plays on its own and your phone stays free. AirPlay is the fastest way to get a channel on the screen right now, with nothing to install.
- Route A — a tvOS app (best for daily use).
- Install iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV on the Apple TV, add your Xtream Codes login once, and the channel list and TV guide live on the box. This is the closest thing to a traditional TV experience.
- Route B — AirPlay from iPhone or iPad (fastest, no install).
- Play a channel in an IPTV app on your iPhone or iPad and AirPlay it to the Apple TV. No second subscription, no extra app on the TV. Good if you only watch occasionally.
Before you start.
You need three things. Your OTTV welcome email with the Xtream Codes login (server URL, username, password). An Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K on a current version of tvOS. A network connection — Ethernet is best for 4K, otherwise 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router.
If you only have an M3U URL, run it through the M3U to Xtream Codes converter first. Most tvOS apps accept both, but the three-field login is far less painful to type with a remote.
Install a tvOS IPTV app, step by step.
Six steps. About five minutes, most of it spent typing the login.
- 01 · Step one
Open the App Store on the Apple TV home screen.
- 02 · Step two
Search for “iPlayTV” or “GSE Smart IPTV”. iPlayTV is a one-time purchase with no ads; GSE Smart IPTV is free with ads between sessions. Both play Xtream Codes and M3U.
- 03 · Step three
Install and open the app. Confirm with your Apple ID if it is a paid app.
- 04 · Step four
Choose Xtream Codes / Add playlist. Give it a name (OTTV), then enter the server URL, username, and password from your welcome email. Tip: when the field is focused, a prompt appears on a nearby iPhone so you can type with the phone keyboard instead of the remote.
- 05 · Step five
Let the list load.A spinner runs for ten to thirty seconds while the app pulls the channels and EPG. If the guide stays empty, add the EPG URL from your email under the app's EPG settings.
- 06 · Step six
Start watching. Open Live TV for channels, Movies or Series for on-demand. The login is saved, so the app opens straight to your channels next time.
AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad.
If you would rather not install anything on the TV, AirPlay is three taps. Play a channel in your iPhone IPTV app, tap the AirPlay icon in the player, and pick the Apple TV. The stream switches over within a second and the phone becomes the remote.
Keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. AirPlay over Wi-Fi 5 holds a 1080p stream on most home networks; for 4K, put the Apple TV on Wi-Fi 6 or Ethernet. If the picture stutters, wire the Apple TV first before assuming the stream is the problem.
Recording, parental controls, and casting.
Three features people ask about most on Apple TV, answered honestly.
- Recording / DVR is limited.
- tvOS players do not match TiviMate's scheduled recording. For a proper DVR, use TiviMate on an Android TV box, or a desktop app on Mac or Windows. Catch-Up TV, where available, covers most of what people want recording for.
- Parental controls have two layers.
- Many tvOS apps can PIN-lock or hide adult categories in their own settings. On top of that, Apple's Screen Time and content restrictions in tvOS Settings apply across the whole device, not just one app.
- Casting means AirPlay here.
- Apple TV receives AirPlay, not Chromecast. From an iPhone or iPad it is one tap. From an Android phone there is no native cast to Apple TV — use a native tvOS app on the box instead.
Common Apple TV IPTV problems.
- “The app says invalid login.”
- Almost always a typo from the remote keyboard. Re-enter the server URL exactly as it appears in the OTTV email, including the port and any
http://prefix, and use the iPhone keyboard prompt to avoid slips. - “4K channels stutter.”
- Switch the Apple TV to Ethernet, or move it onto the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band next to the router. 4K needs a steady connection more than a fast average one. The buffering guide covers the rest.
- “No TV guide, just channel names.”
- Add the EPG URL from your welcome email under the app's EPG settings and refresh. Some apps ignore the EPG embedded in the Xtream Codes login and need it added separately. See Fix EPG not showing.
Frequently asked.
- Can I install IPTV Smarters or TiviMate on Apple TV?
- TiviMate is Android-only, so it does not run on Apple TV. IPTV Smarters Pro is not on tvOS either; the closest option is Smarters Player Lite, which appears on the tvOS App Store when Apple has it live. The most consistently available tvOS players are iPlayTV and GSE Smart IPTV. All of them load the same Xtream Codes or M3U login.
- Do I have to pay for a tvOS IPTV app?
- Not necessarily. GSE Smart IPTV has a free, ad-supported tvOS build. iPlayTV is a one-time purchase (around $4.99 on tvOS) with no ads and faster channel switching. Either way you still need an active IPTV subscription — the app is only the player.
- Is it easier to just AirPlay from my iPhone?
- For a quick watch, yes. Play a channel in an IPTV app on your iPhone or iPad, tap the AirPlay icon, and pick the Apple TV — the stream moves to the TV in a second and costs nothing extra. For daily viewing a native tvOS app is smoother, because your phone is free to use and the TV keeps playing on its own.
- Why is typing my login on Apple TV so painful?
- The tvOS on-screen keyboard is slow. Two shortcuts help: when the login field is focused, a notification pops up on a nearby iPhone letting you type with the phone keyboard; or, in apps that support it, add your playlist by a short URL and let the app pull the rest. Copy the exact server, username, and password from your OTTV welcome email to avoid typos.
- Can I record live TV (DVR) on Apple TV?
- tvOS IPTV apps have limited recording compared with TiviMate on Android. Some, like iPlayTV, can capture a stream, but scheduled DVR is not their strength and tvOS storage is restricted. If recording matters, use TiviMate Premium on an Android TV box or a desktop app on Mac or Windows.
- Are there parental controls on Apple TV IPTV apps?
- Some tvOS players let you PIN-lock or hide adult categories in their own settings. You can also add a system layer with Apple's Screen Time and content restrictions under Settings, which apply across the whole Apple TV rather than one app.
- Which Apple TV model do I need?
- Any Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K running a current version of tvOS. The 4K models handle 4K IPTV streams comfortably; the HD model is fine for HD and Full HD channels. Older 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs do not run App Store apps and can only receive AirPlay.
- Should I use Wi-Fi or Ethernet on Apple TV?
- Ethernet if you can reach it, especially for 4K. Apple TV 4K has a Gigabit Ethernet port on the higher-tier model; a wired connection removes the most common cause of buffering. On Wi-Fi, put the Apple TV on the 5 GHz band close to the router.
